A 1937 work by Salvador Dalí not seen in public for more than 25 years will be the star display at Barcelona’s Mayoral gallery from October 2015 to January next year.
Anatomies is a painting Dalí (1904-1989) did in oil on cardboard stuck to a plank, 50 centimetres high and 64 centimetres across (pictured above).
The gallery’s forthcoming exhibition, SALVADOR DALÍ: Master at metamorphosis, includes about 30 other paintings, including Dalienne Empire, a 1965 work, 46.5 x 34cm (pictured below).
Mayoral Gallery Director Jordi Mayoral described the forthcoming show as “powerful” and timely.
It follows “important Dalí shows in prestigious, important museums around the world (like the Centre Pompidou Paris, Instituto Tomie Othake São Paulo, Centro Cultural do Banco do Brasil Rio de Janeiro and Museo Reina Sofía Madrid) and their successful public support as well as his most important auction sales in these last five years.”
The exhibition, curated by Dalí specialist Ricard Mas, includes the artist’s works on canvas, watercolours, collages, drawings and sculptures. Early and rare works from Dalí’s youth include L’horta des Llaner, painted in 1921, when Dalí was 17 years old. The work represents his parents’ home in Cadaqués, well-known as his most inspirational village.
A selection of six Fashion Design drawings from 1965 are included. Dalí reached agreed with the Wisconsin clothing manufacturer Jack A. Winter to design a line of clothing that would include beach and swimwear, sportswear, and night and homewear for Autumn 1965. He also arranged with the company to show his designs in a travelling exhibition. The models were displayed in Paris that same year, but none of the clothing based on those designs was ever mass-produced.
The exhibition is to be held in collaboration with the Descharnes family, longtime friends of the artist, The Dalí Museum in Florida and friends of the artist. Robert Descharnes (1926-2014) and Dalí met aboard the ocean liner S.S. America in 1950, introduced by the painter Georges Mathieu (1921-2012) and remained longtime friends.
